Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
It is not enough to simply teach children to read; we have to give them something worth reading, something that will stretch their imaginations, something that will help them make sense of their own lives and encourage them to reach out toward people whose lives are quite different from their own.
I work in a low income school district in Washington State.
One hundred percent of my students receive free and reduced price lunch. Even though they have all sorts of odds against them, I am convinced that they are some of the sweetest, most hardworking kids I have ever worked with. I believe it is my job to help prepare them to be college and career ready to go out and take on the world!
My Project
I recently went to a workshop titled "What's New In Children's Literature." This workshop helped me pick out read aloud titles to use in my classroom. The presenter shared the top books of 2013-2014 and even provided activities to do with each book. She shared many of the books on her recommendation list. As she shared them, she had the audience feeling a variety of emotions. I want my students to know what it is like to feel these emotions through books. I plan on using these books to bring back the love of reading to my students.
I am a firm believer that if a student loves to read, they will make it far in life.
These are some of the best books that are out there right now. I know that through these books, my students will experience the joy of reading a great book. Thank you in advance for supporting our classroom!
