My students come from socio-economically challenged homes where there is often only one parent involved in raising the student. I have up to 140 widely varied abilities in our intervention program including students with special needs, students who speak little to no English, and students who are often not sure where their evening meals will come from. The parents are however, surprisingly involved in the classroom and want their students to be successful.
Looking for resources for my students is my number one priority to level the playing field for these kids.
I do what I can to make sure they have opportunities and experiences in my classroom that they may not get at home. Struggling students often spend years in the catching up process, so having access to new materials to keep their interest in critical.
My Project
We have students who struggle with reading and we are constantly looking for new books to keep their interest and motivate them to continue reading. The levels of the books selected in this project are often difficult levels for students to work through. The more resources we have at this level, the better. We often find they have already read the books we have on hand, so they are not as interested in reading them again. The books we need the most are at the levels requested so it would provide ample selections to choose from. This in turn will hopefully increase reading levels to make our students more successful. New books are always a motivator for students who typically do not like or struggle with reading. We love books!
