Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are bright, eager to learn, and excited to come to school each day so they can grow as much as they possibly can. Many of my students come from low-income homes, where they have no technology or resources to engage in learning in a fun and interactive way. All of our students receive free or reduced lunch, and many of our students come from homes where only Spanish is spoken. This doesn't keep the students or parents from staying involved in events or programs at school!
My Project
My students have long asked for creative ways to exercise at no expense to their learning. They have said, "It is too long to sit in my desk. Can we move around as long as we still do our Math?" One even said, "At my old school the teacher let us track our steps and wiggle on cushions while we did our work." So, they inspired both the investigation into what these items were and this request for items to help the kids sustain focus in the classroom while also staying physically active. Because of our diversity and clientele, the students often can lose focus and let their minds wander. The wobble cushions will engage their core muscles so they exercise while concentrating on their work. On several occasions students have asked me "how many steps do you have?", so these FitBit trackers will help inspire them to keep moving throughout the day and challenge them to reach their step goal. This exercise equipment will be vital to their learning. The students will easily surpass sixty minutes a day of exercise, physically increasing blood flow and cardio as they complete their class work.
My especially diverse student population needs to be challenged in the classroom while staying physically active.
In doing both at the same time, they will have better attention, learn valuable information, and retain information better throughout the day. This will help the students not only in the classroom, but also at home and in the community. The students will inspire and challenge each other to be more fit, and as they become more fit, their energy and enthusiasm will increase.playground and in extra curricular sport activities.
