Ms. McKiernan-Allen from Indianapolis IN is requesting sports & exercise equipment through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need to engage in more physical activity. With rates of obesity continuing to rise, our school is making an intentional effort to get our kids moving. We will use these pedometers for running club.

The students I work with come from all different walks of life. The majority of my students are learning to speak English. Many of them are the only English speakers in their households. My students are behind academically but show so much potential.
The best part about my students is their sense of curiosity.
I often find myself shocked with the amount of things my students see and deal with on a daily basis. However, when they are at school, they truly want to know about everything. They are inquisitive, refreshing, and creative. All my students truly want to learn and do well, they just need intentional opportunities.
Health issues in lower income communities in the United States are on the rise. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, childhood obesity rates have tripled since the 1970's. 1 in 5 of school children has obesity. The students at TGNS often don't engage in any physical activity outside of their 30 minute recess.
As a school we are attempting to help our students learn to live a healthy and active lifestyle.
TGNS has added a running club to the list of offered sports. In this club students will find joy in physical activity. We will be running through the community to help our kids live a healthier lifestyle, and to inspire the community to engage in healthier lifestyles.
The pedometers in this project will help our students keep track of the miles they run throughout the duration of run club. It will allow them to see their progress as they develop into better runners.
