Kindergarten is a special place where children are open and ready to grow and interact with the world around them. Every morning they are eager to learn and be with their friends.
I am lucky enough to teach 20 five-and six-year-olds at an ethnically and socially diverse, Title 1 school in the beautiful mountain town of Asheville, NC.
We build a caring school family by celebrating our differences, practicing peaceful problem solving, and taking care of each other. Each day brings brand new opportunities to love, play, and learn!
My Project
Our class has just begun to explore the positive powers of flexible seating in our room. Students seem more engaged and are able to have more focus and stamina when using different kinds of work spots around the classroom.
I found that students feel empowered by having some options and choices of how and where they work best.
We know that kindergarteners like to move it, move it! Furniture such as wiggle and scoop chairs stimulate a child's sense of touch and allow small movements that can help students focus and process information better.
Some children enjoy sitting at traditional tables, but many need an opportunity to get up and move around to find a comfy spot for their best ideas to come out.
With help from you, I can continue to create an environment of choice in my classroom for my students!
