My students are full of energy, eager to explore, and love to ask questions. We have a diverse group of students from many cultures and backgrounds. However, most of our students live in poverty, with hard-working families.
As first graders, there is so much for them to learn in a school year.
Learning isn't just about reading, math, and other academics though! We also need to learn how to cooperate, problem solve, be a leader, and have fun! These days so many children spend a lot of time on tablets and other technology. We want our children to learn how to have some good old-fashioned fun and be kids, too!
My Project
We have been noticing that in recent years, more children are beginning school without knowing how to really play. Kids are spending a great deal of time on tablets and other technology. Lack of authentic play affects their ability to learn, cooperate, compromise, and problem-solve. It's meant that recess has resulted in a lot more aggressive behavior in the last couple years and that children seem to have more issues with impulse control. Therefore, we're working on teaching the children a variety of games, so they have a bunch to choose from instead of the typical boys chase girls and tag. We're also working on modeling how to problem-solve, take turns, and compromise. More playground equipment sure would help us with this! This project is full of wonderful activities to help with balance, hand-eye coordination, games to get their heart pumping, and just plain FUN activities. Some are good for kids to do along, while others are meant for two or more. Please help us get back to the basics and help us teach kids how to have fun and get along! You'll also help them improve in reading, math, and other academics.
