As a teacher in a low-income school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, my students are some of the most resilient, hard-working kids I've met.
My energetic students love to move and learn.
Flexible seating is a research based method that allows students to do both! Flexible seating gives students the power to choose where they sit and makes them aware of how they learn best. A student that likes to sit at a stool for math may enjoy snuggling up in a cozy spot to read a book. Flexible seating gives students the freedom to make these choices daily.
My Project
After doing a lot of research, I have begun to implement flexible seating in my classroom this year. So far, we have lowered tables with pillows, stools, ottomans, clipboards on the carpet, and adjustable chairs. I have seen a large improvement in my students academics as well as behavior this year as a result. The students can focus for longer time periods because they are comfortable and have the ability to move as they work.
My students have been enthusiastically requesting that I add more flexible seating options and have hand picked these seating choices.
They have tried out the wobble chairs in another classroom and have been insisting our classroom needs them ever since. They would also love to add more seating options to our ever growing library. They were so excited to find a couch that matches our classroom. I believe this would help make our classroom feel more like a home.
