This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a diverse group of learners in an urban Title I school, and nearly half of them are English Learners. We are a community school in the middle of an established neighborhood. We host family resource nights, evening events devoted to math, science, literacy and art, and fabulous fundraisers.

My students are creative, exuberant, and always on the lookout for new experiences.

They speak different languages and walk through the classroom door with different contributions to our classroom community.

My Project

First thing each morning my class spends time walking laps on the playground. It's a great way to ease into the day, giving them time to talk to their classmates and to me, and also to get our hearts, lungs, muscles and minds warmed up for the day ahead.

A class set of pedometers that record each student's steps would be a great way to take our exercise routine to the next level!

It would allow them to set step goals and work towards them throughout the week. It would make them more aware of how much they do - or don't - move during the school day. And it would allow us to incorporate math as well: students could use their step count to practice rounding, expanded notation, graphing... the possibilities are endless!
