My students need a pedal desk as a choice for seating in our classroom.

Our school is part of a high needs district. The students are diverse in all capacities. Many of them have issues that are beyond their control but that directly impact their school experience. Sometimes these issues overwhelm children to the point where learning is not possible. This is when we need to give them the support they need to maximize learning. In this classroom, we work hard to make the environment safe, accepting, and successful for all learners.
Our first graders are very active.
We want to capitalize on this energy and provide the best environment and experiences to foster learning. We want to empower students with the ability to make choices that will help them facilitate their own growth. We want them to not only be successful but feel personally responsible for their own achievements.
Last year, I implemented a very successful routine of seating choice in my first grade classroom. With the help of Donors Choose, the students had a variety of choices such as wobble stools, bean bags, cushions, baskets, etc. Most of the choices, however, were stationary. This year, I am looking to add a choice that allows students the freedom to move as they work.
Each morning students are asked to consider, "Where will I do my best work today?" Helping students to identify their feelings and how those feelings may impact their learning is key to success.
With the addition of the pedal desk, I am hoping to get kids engaged even when they are feeling the urge to be moving.
