Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a total of 32 students, many of which have Individualized Education Plans outlining accommodations galore. The one that always seems to stand out to me is "preferential seating". I realized that many would assume that means the student needs to sit in the front of the classroom, facing the teacher. Hmm? That is where I disagree. How about providing ALL students a flexible seating choice, in which they take control over their mind and body!
My students are strong willed, unique, and with helping hands CAN achieve anything.
Our class motto is, " Together we can accomplish anything." We recite this motto as a class while building a strong sense of community every day at our morning meeting. My students are smart kids, who must work extremely hard each day to overcome hurdles in their learning. Many of my students are battling short term and working memory deficits, hyper-activity, and home lives that provide very little support.
My students are clever, spontaneous, and need lots of positive encouragement. My goal is to create an environment where each child can succeed to their full capacity.
My Project
Students need to move! These Hokki stools will provide an outlet for students who struggle to sit still. They will be able to move while sitting and focus more on their learning/completing assignments and less on controlling their body. We know that keeping the mind and body connected and on the move are great enhancers to student learning. Think about how productive you are after a 20 minute workout!
Our classroom environments should facilitate collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking.
Shaping my classroom into an environment that is best conducive to learning begins with the Hokki stools and student rocker. Some first response benefits to the stools will be burning more calories, putting excess energy to work, increasing intrinsic motivation and engagement, and improving posture while building core strength. It's no surprise to us that physical activity goes hand in hand to higher academic performance and improved behavior.
When considering the learning space for students, flexible seating is a must. By creating a space that is brain-friendly for students, we can also reach elements such as, providing a safe place to learn and grow, movement around the room, and choice by students. The Hokki stools and student rocker are the first step in my long list of ways to create the best environment for success. It is essential that we never overlook the impact of the learning space and movement. If you could choose where to work for a 6 hour day, would you choose a local coffee shop with flexible seating or a classroom full of desk and plastic backed chairs? I know what I would choose!
