Describe my students...most would say "difficult," "disrespectful," "challenging." And although some of this is true at times, I see great potential. They're difficult and challenging, but those aren't always bad qualities; and instead of disrespectful, I like to think of them as down right honest.
They have difficult pasts, a present with a "bad" reputation, and a future that could be great; if given the opportunity and belief that they can do great things.
They lack confidence in themselves, they've always been told their "naughty," and most of them are sad on the inside.
But, they're amazing, they're smart, and they think outside the box. They need the chance to shine!
My Project
We need wobble stools, balance stones, and thera-putty which will allow students to manipulate or move, while continuing to engage in academic tasks. The wobble stools allow the students to gently sway or rock back and forth, while maintaining focus on a task. Think, how often do you sit for an extended period of time and bounce your leg up and down?
Research also supports a link between movement and learning.
Oxygen is essential for the brain to function, and increased blood flow increases the amount of oxygen getting to the brain. Physical activity, or movement is a substantial way to increase blood flow, and oxygen, to the brain.
This movement could include balance stones while reading, a wobble stool while working on an independent math assignment, or even thera-putty while listening to a whole group science lesson.
Sensory movement objects are essential for students; especially students that are already struggling to make good choices. With a little extra movement within their day, they may be able to control some of their impulses.
