My Students

In my classes, most of our equations in physics come from observations and data we collect instead of from the teacher or text. I want my students to experience science in the way that scientists experience science which is by careful observation.

My physics students, like most students thrive with hands-on investigations.

They are motivated and enthusiastic about our science investigations, especially when it involves the use of technology. Our school has a large proportion of economically disadvantaged students. The budget we have for physics isn't sufficient to order the equipment we are requesting for this project.

My Project

Our students can use this lab equipment in many different mechanics units. I can envision 3 times immediately that we can use the equipment requested. We can use the vernier dynamics system to establish relationships between force and acceleration, impulse and momentum change and work done vs. kinetic energy gained. It is much easier to develop valid mathematical relationships for mechanics investigations with high quality equipment that yields valid results.

The equipment we use now is not adequate for achieving the results we are looking for.

We are in need of high quality, low friction equipment in order to achieve the kind of results needed to create valid mathematical models for the our mechanics investigations. Students take greater ownership in their learning if they believe what they are doing will help them better understand the principles behind the problems they are solving.
