The students in my classroom come from a rural low income county where family members set examples. The family members might be farmers, factory workers, work at the local chain store, or even own their own business. My students enjoy acting out experiences that they have encountered.
My students are eager to share their experiences.
They enjoy having hands on materials to use. The opportunities that are provided for them in our school might be the only chance they might have to play during the day.
My Project
With the dramatic play items, my students can pretend to be doctors, chefs, ice cream shop owners, vets, astronauts, policemen and more! With the wooden grocery store they will be able to act out scenarios that they see at the local store where some of the parents work. Similarly, they will use the play pizza set and cash register to practice working at the local pizza parlor, buying and selling food items.
The benefits of using the play cash register is that the children get to have hands on contact with money and start to understand the importance of it in daily life.
Students will learn how to use money by counting it, using simple math to add and to play cooperatively with others.
The costumes for the doctor, vet, policeman and astronaut will encourage the students to strive for occupations not related to their current experiences.
The students will be excited to come to school and have a chance to be someone that they might want to be when they grow up.
