Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are happy, hardworking first graders who love school and really embody the joy of learning. They are immigrants or the children of immigrants and are mostly second language learners. The children attend a medium-sized, urban elementary school which cannot afford to provide all of the resources that we might want to share with them. Unfortunately, their parents are often unable to provide these extras either. As teachers, we believe that our kids deserve to have all the same experiences and opportunities as their more well-off counterparts. The kids are eager to learn, and it is our responsibility to help them succeed.

My Project

I am requesting 25 subscriptions each to Scholastic News and Science Spin magazines so that my students can learn about current events while improving their reading skills. I will use the requested Scholastic News magazines to help teach my children about current events and social studies. We will read them on a weekly basis and have discussions about what we've learned from the magazines and what is going on in the world. Since the magazines are written at an appropriate reading level for my second graders, reading and review will help them with their decoding and comprehension skills. These magazines will provide a valuable learning experience in an enjoyable and interesting format.

Everything that I can give to my kids that is outside of the regular textbooks or that enhances the curriculum makes their education fuller and more meaningful.

I have fond memories of our classroom 'newspapers' when I was a student, and I look forward to giving my students that same enjoyable, valuable experience.
