Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Why should we care about what happens in other countries? It doesn't affect me! Help me open our students eyes by seeing through Scholastic magazines that global issues very much affect our country, which in turn affects each one of us.
My students attend a public middle school grades 6th - 8th in Southern California.
We are a Title 1 school, with a population of 1,200 students, 97.5% are Hispanic of which 92% were eligible for free/reduced lunch. Due to socioeconomic issues, I find many students are concerned about the immediate problems, whether in their home, neighborhood or the city they live in. In my class, I want them to understand how global issues can in fact affect us all, and why we should look beyond our "own backyard."
My Project
I am requesting 40 subscriptions to Junior Scholastic:Social Studies/Current Events for my elective class, "Our Global World." These magazines are colorful, written for middle school language, events are current and varied. By subscribing, students will also have access to their (Scholastic) complete online resources. Two online games will be available for our students with every issue! I know that when "online" is mentioned, our students light up. This would be a fantastic way to complement our course of study. In addition, there is a political cartoon in every issue. This would be a great help for 8th grade students to better understand political cartoons. I envision my students more clearly seeing how global events can trickle into our country and can affect us all.
I feel strongly about this project because students at our school do not have access to this magazine due to funds.
There is one issue I received free from Scholastic (February 28, 2011) that I still share with my 8th grade U.S. History classes titled "Marriage - or Else." The subtitle summarizes it best, "In Afghanistan, girls as young as 8 can be forced into marriage - often with brutal consequences." How can this not open my students eyes and see global issues about young people?
