Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from a variety of backgrounds that shape their learning experiences and contribute to that of their peers. Like many students, mine are excited about the hands-on and innovative approaches to their learning in order to not only comprehend the concepts they need to know, but to have fun while doing it.
My students also strive to find new ways of incorporating alternative methods to our lessons that make them relatable to what interests them and to ensure that those lessons have a lasting impact beyond the current school year.
My Project
The role of journalism has been ever present in American History, from the Revolutionary Era with the publication of newspapers and the impact of Benjamin Franklin to the role of the internet and major media networks today. However, most impactful to the widespread reach of journalism and overall American popular culture was the development of television and the nightly news.
This project will aim at demonstrating to the students the role journalism has played in documenting and impacting American history through its major events.
The students will use the television and its stand, along with our green screen and iPads to film re-enactments of major news stories in the 20th Century. The students will film their re-enactment in front of our green screen and use the Green Screen by Do Ink app on the iPad. The students will have the iPad connected to the television, so the students portraying the anchors can immediately view how their broadcast will be once the background and overlays are placed.
This cross-curricular project will not only help the students acquire the historical content of the class, but also help them gain technological skills, and learn about the impact journalism has played on American history from events like the Watergate scandal to Walter Cronkite's reporting on the Vietnam War. Hopefully, inspiring students to the fields of investigative journalism.
