I am incredibly lucky to have the ability to work with students who are diverse in culture, abilities and needs and I always look forward to watching them all grow over the course of a school year. Over the course of the next couple of years, my school is going to be rapidly changing and growing and our percentage of students who receive free and reduced lunch is going to jump significantly. With that, I want to ensure that we continue to do all we can to work to close the achievement gap. My goal as a teacher, is to make sure that each student not only feels successful but IS successful. Throughout the year, my students will learn their academic strengths and challenges. They will learn to persevere when faced with those challenges and they will learn the importance of making mistakes.
To quote Elbert Einstein, "A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new."
My Project
These materials will support me in teaching both small and whole group math lessons. The materials will allow me to better demonstrate the concepts I’m trying to teach. The materials will also allow my students more opportunities for hands-on learning experiences in both small and large group settings.
There are many students who believe they are “not good at math”.
However, as teachers, we know that there is no such thing as being “bad at math”. It’s all about understanding the process and finding strategies that work and make sense to each student. For that math journey to be successful, students need many opportunities to play and have fun with math. These math supplies will allow my students to do just that.
To quote Elbert Einstein again, "Education is not the learning of facts, but the training of the mind to think.” My hope is that the more I allow my students to play, discover, manipulate and share out their thought process the more their minds will grow.
