This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Being a child can be tough. Being a child growing up with absentee parents and little money can be excruciating. As a teacher, we have no control over what happens to our children when they leave us. School should be a place of fun and exploration in a safe space!
My students are first graders from inner-city single-parent homes.
They do not come to school with the common skills you would expect. They have little or no prior knowledge of things you and I would take for granted.
I want my classroom to be exciting and help catch students up on experiences I would provide for my own children.
My Project
My students love to do projects. I teach math and social studies and so we usually have time during the week to be creative.
Children need to use their artistic abilities starting at an early age.
I have two classes of first graders so I run out of supplies faster than I used to. I want to help them make great art projects using construction paper and Crayola markers and crayons.
I use these art projects to supplement our math and social studies curriculum. Currently, we are working on measurement so we made robots and then had to measure their body parts using centimeters. The children loved being able to use what they had learned along with their art.
