Help me give my students financial games, cardstock, paper cutter, cash register, plastic folders, and a stock market book.
My students are incredible. I have 24 motivated English language learners who are eager to learn. My students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds with limited resources available to them. We are a Title I, Performance Improvement School, with one hundred percent of our students on the free lunch program. Many parents work two jobs and are struggling to support their families.
Though their outside environment may not be conducive to learning, my students have an insatiable love of learning.
I know that if we provide them with the right support, resources, and opportunities, they can experience success.
Many financial experts say that the earlier children learn about investing, the better their chances for financial stability in the long term.
Teaching them about the stock market will encompass all academic areas while being fun at the same time!
I will create a pseudo stock market where I control the prices of stocks they will be interested in. I will write a weekly newsletter that gives them clues as to how the stock will fall or go up. The cardstock and paper cutter will be used to create the logos of famous companies they recognize with the price of 1 share. Each group will get $500 to purchase shares of stocks from 20 familiar companies.
Every week, they must graph their findings and show the rise or fall of their stocks. Each group will need to collaborate and decide if they'd like to keep, sell, or buy new stock based on the newsletter of the week. They need to articulate valid reasons for changing stocks and write why they made gains or losses. At the end of each week we will use the cash register to receive and pay out
They will use the zip envelopes for the newsletter, graph of their stocks, money, and gains and losses sheets. The clear sleeves are for the stocks and current prices I will create and put on the bulletin board weekly.
