PLEASE HELP me provide quality reading materials for my culturally diverse classroom! I teach third grade in a small, rural school. Our student population has been declining over the past few years. Therefore, this year a change in our school boundaries has brought 31 new Hispanic students to our school. Our staff is excited to have more diversity in our school population.
As I have begun assessing the needs of my students this school year, I have found that many of them have deficits in vocabulary and background knowledge. Many of my students come from low income families and have not had enriching experiences in their homes. I very much want to help them to become familiar with the wonders of nature and the exciting vistas of the world beyond our small community. I was saddened the other day when one of my students was having trouble writing about something fun that he did during the summer. While trying to encourage him, I realized that he had not even traveled beyond the borders of our little valley.
It is my desire to bring the wonders of the world into my classroom. I believe that having the opportunity to read and discuss the articles in the Weekly Reader each week will be a great resource for my students. I have already noticed, even in the first week of school, that my students love to learn and will be excited to have the Weekly Reader to read, enjoy, and share with their families.
One thing that most teachers struggle with is having enough reading material for students. I am no exception. I require that my students read at home each night. However, many of them have no books at home to read. If you decide to fund this project, each student in my class will have their own copy of Weekly Reader to take home each week. I can't wait to see their faces when I tell them that it is theirs to keep!
