When you walk into my kindergarten classroom, you experience a buzz of excitement for learning. My students come from low-income families where food is scarce, parents work many shifts and are rarely home, and many people are crammed into small living spaces. My students work hard every day to succeed in reading, math, and writing despite hardships they feel at home.
For students who come from poverty, school offers a safe haven where they know they can reach for their dreams and feel successful.
As an A+ Arts Magnet School, I focus on integrating visual arts, music, dance and drama to enrich and deepen my students learning. My classroom is the first place where many students have experiences in academics. Some families have no books or art supplies at home, which drastically impacts students expose to vocabulary and artistic expression. I want to ensure my students have the best resources to propel their learning to new heights. They can achieve so much with your help!
My Project
My classroom is the first time many of my students think about the world wider than their homes and families. Part of our curriculum is learning about our community and careers within the community. Many students see the people around them but do not understand the importance of their job. They see the garbage collector but do not stop to think about what would happen if he did not do his job.
My students need books about community helpers and careers to deepen their understanding of how jobs contribute to the world and to set goals for their future careers.
I will use these books to provide information about a wide variety of community helpers from firefighters to teachers. This will spark discussions about why these jobs are important. We will also discuss how adults earn money for working and a person meets their needs and wants with the money. This project will also provide us with counting books to help students make connections between real life and math. My students need support to see why math is important and how we use math every day! These books will open my students’ minds to many important concepts!
