My Students

I have an amazing Fourth-grade class in a neighborhood school in Anchorage, Alaska. We are extremely diverse, but in our classroom, we treat each other like family. I am amazed every day by how respectful and open-minded my students are regarding their differences in culture and background. Many of my students live in low-income neighborhoods. They receive most of their meals and snacks through the free and reduced lunch program. I have an excited and energetic group that loves to learn, especially through projects.

I strive to build a classroom environment for my students that is reliable, comfortable, and consistent for those who may not have the same experience outside of school.

I am a second-year teacher and my classroom is a work in progress. I am in need of organizational materials, book series, and visual resources to make my classroom an awesome place to learn and a haven for students that have challenging home lives.

My Project

My classroom environment is built around fostering independence. My class library and student supply station are in the same area. It is an independent workstation, students can stretch out with a clipboard and work, or stop by for a book or a pair of scissors. My shelving is dated and I am looking to upgrade the organization with the cloth bins and the compartmentalized shelving unit. My goal is to create an environment where students can: find a variety of books they are interested in such as author's series or science readers, use flexible seating areas with the foam reading pillows to stretch out, and have easy access to supplies and resources when needed. I want to expand my class library to promote literacy and reading for pleasure.

A successful classroom is full of self-directed and creative learners and it is my job to provide an environment to achieve those standards.

My class loves geography, map reading, and earth sciences and often choose books about those topics. Most weeks we have only one class period dedicated to either Social Studies or Science lessons, with the "Eyewitness" and National Geographic readers, they will be able to explore those topics throughout the week. I am looking to expand my series collections with the Louis Sachar, Roald Dahl, and "The Who Was" Biography collections to name a few. During our "Idita-Read" contest in March, students read the length of the Iditarod Trail where every mile of the race is a minute to read and recorded each checkpoint. I had students that finished books like "Holes," and the "The Witches" and were looking for other books that were similar styles or genres. My students need a variety of titles and genres readily accessible to continue to promote pleasure reading.
