Because my students are second graders (7 and 8-year-old children), they are still young and need frequent movement breaks to keep their brains focused and ready to learn each day.
Most students qualify for free and reduced price lunch. Many students come from single parent households or are raised by other family members. A lot of our students take care of themselves or siblings when they get home. Many of these families face huge challenges, and some are not able to provide the time and resources to support learning at home.
When my students come to school, it is the best part of their day. It breaks my heart to know that the words, "You are so smart," or "You can do this" only comes from the classroom. Each day I want my students to know they are loved, supported and that someone believes in them.
My Project
"Sitting still is overrated. It makes sense for the opera or for meditating, but in most classrooms and child care centers, it's given far more honor than it deserves. Children need to move." - Tom Hunter, National Association for the Education of Young Children.
My students sit in the same chairs all day long, and flexible seating options will provide a change of scenery and an added enthusiasm for coming to work at my teacher table.
My students constantly ask to stand while they write, pace while they read, and choose their own learning spot in the classroom. My students should be moving and interacting with one another every day. Yet our traditional classroom furniture does not fit our level of movement. This kid-inspired project will help maintain their love of learning by keeping them engaged physically while learning difficult material. Items such as balance balls, wobble cushions, and stools can allow this type of learning to occur. They will take place of traditional classroom seating. These items will allow my students, especially those who struggle with staying focused during learning time and work time, to channel their energy by being able to move while they work. Having options for my students gives them the opportunity to create their own learning environment.
Research has shown that there is a neurological pathway leading from a body's balance and movement system to its alert system in the brain. Movement actually allows for alertness and attention.
Students need choices about how they engage in classroom seating options. This project will provide my 2nd graders the best possible physical environment to keep them focused and learning while loving school.
