Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students at the W. School often face realities in their everyday lives that many of us cannot even imagine. The majority of our students are immigrants, learning English as a second (or third!) language, economically disadvantaged, homeless or in foster care, or all of the above.
No matter their struggles, all our students work very hard to simply get to school, and make the most out of every second they have here.
Not only is school a safe place for them, they know the importance of learning and the impact it will have on the rest of their lives. Although our students are from a huge variety of cultures, countries, and socioeconomic situations, the one thing that unifies them is their love for the arts!
My Project
My students are already so naturally musical and creative, but we lack the tools to express our musicality and share it with others. So many of my students and their families take great pride in their cultures, both here in our community and with family and friends in their home countries, and we celebrate this diversity in our school on a daily basis! I would like to bring our love of music and joy for our cultural identities together in the music classroom.
My students and I would love to learn more about what makes their cultures' music special and share it with loved ones near and far.
We plan to learn how to perform authentic music on world percussion instruments and record our performances so that we may share with the community - both locally AND with family and friends "back home", no matter how far that may be! This project will allow my students to learn how to play percussion instruments alone and with others, how to arrange and compose music within historical and cultural contexts, how to record, edit, and mix audio, and how to form deeper connections to the world beyond our classroom walls.
