My students need materials such as Readers Theater books, Sets of Plays, and Broadway musical cds and equipment to listen to them to start the new drama class.
The arts can inspire and help engage our students into their education. Our school was able to add a drama class- just one period and the kids are excited. We do not have any materials of any kind for the class and/or theatre department.
Our student population is diverse.
Many of our students live in a rural area. Some of our students own horse farms and some of them live in broken down trailers. Regardless of where they live, they come to school for an outlet. Our school has a tremendous emphasis on math and reading, which is why it is such a big deal for them to add in some of the arts (especially with all the budget cuts). Our students are very excited to have the opportunity to have this elective and to have a creative outlet. The class is made up of students who sing, act, or just want to try something new. Regardless, they are there because they signed up and want to be there.
My Project
I want to help inspire my students through the arts. Most of them have not had the opportunities to participate in theatre and I know this opportunity will mean a great deal to them. The students will be able to get over stage freight and perform in front of the school by the end of the semester. They will improve their reading skills, memorization skills, public speaking skills, and writing skills without even realizing it! This grant, for many books with plays (both humorous and serious) and for musical CDs with a CD player, will help with the class tremendously. It will help the student have a script/play library where they can try things out or do some research. It will also allow us to listen to music during writing time and to take music on to the stage with us.
This project is near and dear to my heart.
I was a theatre major in college and had many opportunities that I was able to pursue around the United States. I would love to share some of those experiences with the kids and get them motivated into a career in the arts- or at least gain an appreciation of the arts. I feel that their education can be enhanced greatly and they can learn skills that will help them become more independent and outgoing.
