My students need 35 book titles and sets to read and feel success in the classroom. I believe they can by completing a good book and sharing it with others. Success translates to more learning.
My students do not enjoy reading because they struggle with it. By having a greater variety of topics to read I believe I can find something that will fit their comfort zone. This in turn will give them the confidence they need to feel successful and read again. Success is addictive.
My students are 9th & 10th graders with below basic reading skills.
They enjoy everything but school. They have lost their love for learning. I want to help them find it again. They are funny, bright, street smart kids who have a hard time believing in their own success. They believe the world is one big MTV video. I want to show them there is more. With the right selection of books I believe I can help even the most reluctant reader learn more about the world around them.
My Project
Without the experience of academic success, my students most likely will not finish high school. Without an education they will struggle the rest of their lives to survive. Something as simple as learning to love to read can change that mentality. My students are one small adjustment away from greatness. I need your help to create those adjustments in each of them. Increasing reading for fun will help my students read experiments, instructions, analyze relationships and explain their observations in physics and chemistry. Taking a backdoor approach to make them better readers will ultimately make them better learners.
It is heart breaking to watch my students become comfortable with failure.
They just need to experience earning success on their own - not because the class was easier, but because they rose to the occasion. One taste of earned accomplishment can change everything. Do you remember that ONE CLASS that changed your outlook??? I want my classroom to be that ONE CLASS.
