I am a general music teacher for students in grades K to 8 at an elementary school in the south side of Chicago. Students in the primary grades listen to music, describe it, sing, move to music, and play instruments. Over the past year I have started to obtain a percussion instrument collection through Donors Choose. With those instruments, students perform activities based on a combination of speech, movement, and music. In the upcoming school year I intend to expand the percussion ensemble so more students may participate. In this proposal I am requesting a total of 6 medium child sized djembes made by Remo. Djembes are conical drums that are played with the bare hands. Djembes originated in west Africa. There are three basic tones that are played on the djembe, and the instruments are typically played in percussion ensembles. In my classroom I intend to add the djembes to my existing collection of percussion instruments. Through teacher and student led ensemble activities, students learn about musical concepts such as tempo, instrumentation, dynamics, rhythm, and repetition. Your donation will allow students to learn about these musical concepts through hands on participation in a percussion ensemble. Thank you for your generosity.
