Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are inquisitive, engaging fourth graders. They are curious students who love to ask questions and extend their learning. Our classroom is a warm and welcoming community of learners. These amazing young people bring their cultural backgrounds into our class of learners to create a diverse classroom community.
Our 3rd through 8th graders and their families choose to attend this school to be a part of our wonderful, small school learning environment.
I teach at a public magnet school with less than 400 students in 3rd through 8th grades. Our school provides a unique opportunity for upper elementary and middle school students to share the same campus and school community. As a school of choice instead of a neighborhood zoned school, we have students enrolled from throughout the district's different school zones.
My Project
My students need five pairs of high quality Sony headphones to use with our class set of Chromebooks. These small laptops work with online programming, and students need to use sound to listen to directions, problems, and other audio information. The requested items are large, padded, over the ear, noise-canceling headphones that will allow my students to keep the volume up and provide comfortable, long-lasting audio while they are working with technology. I ask students to bring in earbuds each year in August because they are affordable and easy to find, but they also tangle and break easily. With noise canceling headphones, students can easily focus on their own work without being distracted by leaked noise from a neighbor’s computer or the teacher conferencing with nearby students.
Quality headphones will allow my students to focus on their work without getting distracted by other students or getting frustrated by cheap earbuds as they strive to improve their math and literacy skills.
Our regular math and language arts programs have a digital site with many audio features that require individual headphones. In addition, other assignments we do that involve audio (that not everyone needs to hear!) include supplemental math and reading lessons, math fact fluency practice, reading comprehension, and online tests for students who need questions read to them as well as state testing in the spring.
I am slowly working on getting a class set of headphones, so this is my fourth headphones project. I’m very grateful to past donors for helping us get the first 18 pairs, but with 30 students, I would like more so they don’t have to take turns.
