Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a Business school where Science is not really a top priority. Laboratory activities are really outdated. My students don't even know their own blood types. They need to experience lab activities they can relate to and use in the future.
My students live in a very big city.
Most of them come from very poor neighborhoods. They are given free lunches and free transportation in school. Our school budget only allows us to get through each school year. It is really very difficult to request interesting and interactive laboratory activities.
My students mostly use paper labs where they interact with outdated and old equipment every year. Our school tries to make use of whatever resources we can find. But they can only do so much for our students with the budget we get every year.
These students are not that interested in science due to the lack of resources and engaging activities they can talk about and relate to. They are not that excited to go to the laboratory because of lack of materials.
My Project
My students will learn different types of blood with the two blood-typing kits. They will learn what makes each blood type different. By doing this lab activity they can even perform a procedure on how to identify their own blood type and use this information in their real lives and for future use. They will also learn why blood clots are dangerous and why blood transfusion procedures are very important.
This project might stimulate students' interest in science and medical careers in the future.
By experiencing firsthand blood typing procedures it will give them the sense of entitlement of doing and knowing their blood types. They will also be able to use this knowledge to teach others.
