The great thing about Health class is that all students can be successful! Because there are no standardized tests in Health, I have the flexibility to be creative in my teaching. I enjoy using STEM techniques and a variety of resources to motivate my students to make healthy choices for life.
We are a Title I school, as well as a California Distinguished School and a Schools To Watch Model Middle School.
My students are used to working hard and rising to the challenges they face! They enjoy learning and demonstrating their knowledge in unconventional ways, and they really shine when they have access to a variety of resources. The success they achieve in meeting my high standards motivates them to work even harder, then they achieve even more success. It's a great cycle!
My Project
These STEM resources will help my students discover how drugs can affect our circulatory system. Using an Effects of Drugs kit, which we already have, my students will apply dilute solutions of drugs such as aspirin, nicotine, caffeine, and ethyl alcohol to the live Daphnia that are requested. My students will observe changes in the Daphnia's circulatory system, nervous system, and behavior as they are exposed to these drugs. The compound digital microscope can connect to my computer and allow me to project the Daphnia onto a screen for the entire class to see. Together, these materials will have a big impact on my students!
It is very difficult to find STEM materials that pertain to Health class.
The digital microscope and Daphnia will give my students a unique, hands-on view of the effects of drugs. Witnessing the effects of drugs firsthand, and then relating those to themselves, is sure to have a pronounced effect on my students! Thank you for teaching my students that we don't have the heart for drugs!
