Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have a class of fourth-graders who are bilingual in English and Spanish. Our school is located in an urban neighborhood, and all students are eligible for free breakfast and lunch. Almost 80% of our students are English learners, so they need extra support as they learn a second language, in addition to the core curriculum. They learn best when they have opportunities for hands-on learning, especially in math and science.
The goal at our school is for all students to aspire to attend college and have a plan for a future career.
I try to give my students a variety of ways to learn and to share what they have learned with others by incorporating technology into the curriculum and providing opportunities for students to be creative. They enjoy being able to collaborate on projects that help them learn together.
My Project
My students this year are very excited about all things STEM. They have enjoyed having opportunities to learn computer coding through Google CS First and Scratch websites. Through these lessons, they have learned the importance of logical thinking as they built sequences with coding blocks to move characters or change a scene the way they had planned. They have also learned the importance of perseverance when things didn't always turn out as they had planned.
These experiences have made my students eager to expand their coding skills into the 3-dimensional world.
In a previous project, we received two LEGO WeDo 2.0 sets. My students had decided to get only two to try them out and see if we wanted to get more. Of course, once they tried them, they were hooked and knew we needed to get two more so more students will be able to work with them at the same time. They especially like that the sets work with Bluetooth to connect to the Chromebooks we already have, so no additional technology is necessary for them to work.
The two additional LEGO WeDO 2.0 Core Sets will give more students opportunities to design and build their own robots and other projects, which they will be able to program using coding. The WeDo 2.0 curriculum is aligned with all areas of our current Next Generation Science Standards. Students will work in teams to create models and simulations to address real world situations using the LEGO WeDo 2.0 Core Sets. These experiences will help students develop the critical thinking and collaboration skills they will need in their future careers.
