Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Typical day in the class looks something like this - my students enter and they take from their backpacks a copy of a book that we have had circulating through our school for the past 10 years. It is not even an AP textbook. The books are still in fair condition but they are hopelessly antiquated.
My students are 85% low income/free lunch, minority kids from Southern California.
They are mostly African American and Latino with a three to one, female to male ratio. These students travel to school daily through a neighborhood ridden with gang violence, drug abuse and prostitution. Each student wears a school uniform to help distinguish them from the various gang factions that populate the area. They are all intent on graduating and eventually attending college and our teachers and curricula reflect and support that goal.
My Project
Our books are so old. They are not even AP textbooks! It is a shame that our kids are not getting access to the new and better focused materials that have been published in recent years. With these new books our students will be able to access material for the first time in the history of the school that are published within the last few years. This will help make them so much more competitive than they have ever been.
Our kids typically score fairly low on the AP English language exam and I do think it is partly because our materials are so antiquated. With these new books we will finally be able to focus our instruction in a way that is better suited to the requirements of the college board and also to the new common core standards.
These books will make a tremendous difference in our classroom.
Unfortunately they are so expensive I can only ask for a class set, but many kids will benefit over the years. I will have a total of about 75 students and they can share the 30 or so books. The books I am asking for are focused and specific to the content of the course, not just the anthologies we have been using forever. These are real AP Lang textbooks! Just like the private school kids get!
