Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are voracious readers! They always want the latest, hottest book titles available. As avid readers, they often look to me as their school library media specialist to guide them on the best books to read. My students don't always know which books they will like unless they are given the right recommendations on appropriate reading.
What they don't have enough of is popular book titles to help round out the reading experience my students deserve.
Our students have great economic need but they LOVE reading! We are an elementary public school that serves over 700 students. They come from mostly impoverished backgrounds with over 75% of our students receiving free or reduced lunch. This school community is comprised of Hispanic, African American, Asian and Caucasian students. Our Arts Magnet includes students who participate in dance, drama, music and the visual arts. There are also a host of clubs that serve the needs of all interested students.
My Project
Our students love reading books, but the problem is they never have enough popular book titles to dive into. Having these books will allow students to benefit from reading some of the most popular and award winning books for elementary aged students.
Reading a variety of books helps students build vocabulary, integrate knowledge with a vivid imagination, and challenge themselves by thinking critically.
Reading popular books will help our readers expand their knowledge and repertoire of books in different genres.
My project will make a difference because these students currently have very little popular book titles in our library. This grant will help to expand the amount of choices students have when they explore their reading options. Connecting students to good books and a variety of reading choices is an important part of their education as kids and for lifelong learning.
