Ms. Grochowiak from Chicago IL is requesting Books through DonorsChoose, the #1 classroom funding site for teachers.

We Crave Books for Our Social Emotional Learning Library!

Help me give my students books to learn about compassion, empathy, self-love and other social emotional skills. Learning the stories of the character in these books will help create kind citizens, who will transform their communities.

My Students

Eighty percent of my students are low-income and are representative of the diverse linguistic and culturally heritages of Chicago. My students have enormous potential to transform their lives. The biggest challenge they face is learning how to unlock that potential.

Learning leadership skills through physical activity provides opportunities for students to learn how to interact with each other and grow as learns.

Our school is unique because it offers a gifted academic program for bilingual Spanish and Polish students. In addition to weekly physical education classes, our school provides before school and after school programming to teach about sports, teamwork and community building.

Our school offers an Early Childhood Pre-K program which feeds into of primary general education program. Developing physical education skills young children is crucial for their physical, social-emotional and academic skills. Our school is centered around teaching social-emotional skills to help support our students in becoming compassionate, kind well reserved citizens of the world.

My Project

Over the last two years, our school has been implementing restorative justice practices with our students, families and teaching community. These practices allow teachers and support staff to support the whole child with appropriate interventions if students are struggling with behaviors in the school community.

Students and teacher sit in talking circles, where our classroom communities build respect, trust and rapport among students and teachers.

Sitting in circle, is a highlight for many of our students and they look forward to this weekly practice. In circle students share about themselves and teachers explore topics and social-emotional learning competencies that they would like to develop with their students.

Our school serves over 500 students, Pre-K-8th grade and we are being to build a communal social-emotional library, where all staff members can use the books included in this grant to teach and address issues facing our students. Over the next couple of years, we hope to grow this resource and make it available to our parents and community as well. The books included in this grant would be a great starter library for our teachers to use with their students. These books will help address the mental health and other issues that our students encounter in their lives. If we are able to address their concerns and make them feel validated, these students will have a better chance of having success in the classroom and beyond.
