This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
"Creativity, which is the expression of our originality, helps us stay mindful that what we bring to the world is completely original and cannot be compared."~ Brene` Brown's quote resonates with the environment I hope to create for my students. My students face hard battles on a daily basis. I want my classroom to be a place for them to relax, learn, create, and realize that their contribution to the world matters.
My students are FIGHTERS!
Each day they come to school with a willingness to learn and a dream to succeed. This is despite the fact that over 80% of my students qualify for free and reduced priced lunch. Many come from high poverty environments, where there is little educational support at home. Most of my students are not involved in extra-curricular activities that help them to grow in their creativity. Despite all of their circumstances, from living in poverty, single parent homes, and little educational support, our kids show up ready to learn each day. Our school is their home away from home. I want my students to have many ways to have fun and learn at the same time!
My Project
School has become a place of WORK! My students need time to PLAY in order to stay creative and maintain a love of learning. MagnaTiles and Legos will be just one part of our Maker Space. Children (and adults too) need time for creativity! Play can restore a love of learning and build self-confidence. A Maker Space where students can choose to create with art supplies or explore with building supplies is vital to a child's learning process.
According to Stuart Brown, "work does not work without play." A Maker Space will provide that outlet for work to be inspired.
