My fifth grade inclusion classroom is made up of diverse learners from a small town in Western MA. My students are working hard to better themselves each day so that they can gain the skills necessary to be productive members of society and overcome the challenges that many encounter in our high poverty community.
Together, we take pride in our accomplishments and grow immensely as thinkers, readers, and writers over our year in fifth grade.
We love our time together!
My Project
It is important that students have their basic needs met before we ask them to take on the academic challenges we deliver each day. My students greatly benefit from having a supply area for our class that they can visit whenever they run out of essentials at home such as deodorant or toothpaste. Last year was our class's first year having a classroom community locker for personal care items. The concept was a great success and gave students the independence to freely shop for what they needed without having approach a teacher or school nurse to ask for necessary essentials. With the new 2018-2019 school year beginning, we now need to restock our locker with items that we have run out of over the course of the last school year.
If students have their basic needs met and feel well cared for, they can take on the academic demands of their day without worry.
Continuing to stock a supply area for our room to help with personal care would be a wonderful thing. No student should feel that they have to make do without having their basic needs met. I want my students to feel well cared for and equipped with what they need to succeed.
We are also hoping to add a little fun to our long winter of indoor recesses by obtaining some classroom games. It can be a dreary winter season when we are cooped up indoors, and we'd love to add some excitement to our break time.
