Our students come to school every day (with 98.4% attendance) in a diverse, low-income, urban community. They are 68% Asian, 14% African-American, 11% Latino, 6% Caucasian and 1% multiracial.
Our school community supports the whole student, academically, physically and emotionally.
By meeting the needs of our students on many levels, we help them to find success in school and in their community. It is a collective effort to help each of our students become the best people they can be. We try to create a foundation that they will take with them through their education and beyond.
My Project
Each year, our students participate in a citywide Battle of the Books contest. Grades 7-8 get a list of 21 books to read from September through April. If we score high enough on the online test on these books, we advance to the citywide finals with the top 10-12 schools and compete for bragging rights and a really nice trophy!
The book selections in Battle of the Books expose students to a variety of genres that they might not otherwise choose for themselves.
This program is intended to develop or grow a love of reading and learning in students. These books choices open up worlds of reading that eventually reach all students. My favorite part of Battle of the Books is when the students who are not participating in the program start asking to read the books they see their classmates reading for the competition!
Battle of the Books reaches all students and truly does develop a love for reading!
