This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

How can I help my low income students develop a love for reading when they struggle to decode words and understand vocabulary? For most of my students, reading is such a challenge, they would much rather turn on the T.V.

My 4th grade students are creative and curious.

They come to school enthusiastic about learning new skills and gaining new experiences. Most of these students are from low income homes where they do not have easy access to literature, Internet, or adults who can read with them.

My Project

With poetry books at hand, my students will be able to practice reading words quickly and smoothly--as if they are just talking out loud. Students will recognize the flow and pattern that poetry has, much like the rhythm of a song. Comprehension strategy cards will guide students in their understanding of text. These strategy cards will help teach students effective reading activities they can do before, during, and after reading.

In helping these 4th graders become proficient in reading, we can better ensure that they will stay on or above grade level.

Students who can read well graduate from high school and have a better chance at a successful, fulfilling life. Please help these wonderful kids be successful!
