My students need 40 different guided reading books, 2 audio books, 47 leveled books for a library, and word work materials, such as magnetic letters/words and Wikki Stix.
“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.”
- Dr. Seuss
I want to provide my students with leveled books and materials to help them become successful readers and writers.
I provide academic support to students who are on an IEP, an Individualized Education Plan, and who need help to access grade level materials.
The students that I work with, receive supports in the areas of reading, writing, and mathematics. Many of my students are reading 2-3 years below their peers. They struggle with many of the foundational reading skills necessary to become fluent readers. My students are motivated and eager to learn, but they need extra support, in order to make effective progress. It is important that my students have access to high quality texts for reading instruction. My school is in a diverse, urban community, and we serve students from a low income background. All of our students receive free breakfast and lunch, and most of the families struggle financially.
My Project
The materials I have requested, will be used to provide daily guided reading support, and to build a small, classroom library. The books that I chose, have colored illustrations, a wide range of topics, and many different instructional levels. There are stories that will pique the interests of my most reluctant readers. In addition, I will use the hands-on materials, such as Wikki Stix, magnetic letters, and a sentence building easel to provide mini lessons and independent work centers. These materials will be used to provide instruction, to help my students increase their reading skills, specifically in the areas of fluency, comprehension, and decoding. As my students become better readers, they will have more success in the traditional classroom setting.
My students deserve to have high quality materials and books, that will inspire them to become better readers and writers.
This project will provide these much needed materials for my students. Currently, I am using old books and materials, that I can find in the school building, that are no longer being used. In addition, I am making photo copies of the early reader books to use for daily instruction. These materials are outdated, and are not engaging.
