"Highly-Impacted" "Title 1" "At-Risk" These labels fail to capture my students' intelligence, compassion, or capacity for learning and thriving in education and life.
My students, like all children, have ambitions to change the world for the better, and they're more than willing to work hard and make sacrifices to build positive connections between themselves and a larger community.
Although many of them join my class already aware of their lagging skills, they are not defeated. They come day after day smiling and ready to learn because they still believe education is the step toward a future they can be excited about.
As their teacher, I am dedicated to creating a learning environment that ensures each child feels safe, engaged, supported, and challenged so that every student may excel in their last year of elementary education.
My Project
These great works of literature will make a difference in my students' learning by connecting each of them to larger ideas and themes explored through the art of great fiction. Additionally, reading great writers will help the students to better understand what will make their own writing come alive for readers.
Sherman Alexie asked, “What kind of life can you have in a house without books?” and any language arts teacher would ask similarly, "What kind of education can you have in a classroom without great books?" These students deserve the best public education has to offer, and access to high-quality texts is an essential starting point.
These award-winning novels will have a significant impact on all students. Both reluctant and voracious readers will find the stories of survival told through Hatchet and The Call of the Wild compelling and inspiring. I'll be happy to hear when the confess to staying up past their bedtime, unable to put a book down!
