My students need paper for me to make copies for them so they can master skills in order to pass the upcoming STAAR tests.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Even though my school provides two boxes of paper each school year for teachers to make copies, it's not enough. I teach writing and reading, which covers a wide range of skills. Most of my students are a grade level behind, which means I need to cover more basic skills that require more copies.
Intelligent yet academically behind, confident yet insecure about their future, vulnerable yet defensive, those are adjectives that describe my students well.
My school is a fairly small school that has a huge percentage of students that are on free or reduced lunch. A large number of my students are from single-parent homes with parents who have served time in jail or prison. Many of my students are worried about personal issues at home that negatively impact their education on a daily basis. There are a substantial number of students in my class who are at least a grade level behind due to excessive absences, lack of focus in school, and very little parental support. However, these students, once they grasp information, are very capable of success. They persevere through difficult times and are victorious in the end on tests because their pride won't allow them to fail.
Although my school provides two boxes of paper each year for teachers to make copies, it's not enough. I have 36 students who need sheets that help review skills such as grammar, spelling, reading comprehension, vocabulary, and writing. Texas 4th grade also has a standardized writing test, unlike any other elementary class. Thus, I need to copy the state "lined" paper with the two pre-writing/planning pages that will be on the state test on several occasions, so that my students can become very familiar with the process of writing in the manner that the state of Texas requires. Daily homework for 36 students requires 180 copies for one week. Plus, daily classwork to practice the Revising/Editing section of the writing standardized test requires 180 copies for one story alone. That's already 360 copies for one week, not including the lined paper. Clearly, more paper is needed in order to bridge the learning gap. Worksheets are not the only answer, but they definitely help!
Your donation towards copy paper for my class will increase their chances of academic success.
My students learn best when they are able to practice skills on multiple occasions. I have numerous excellent workbooks that I know will help my students understand skills better, but I haven't been able to make copies because I knew I only had enough paper to copy only what was absolutely necessary. This has been a major hindrance, because my students need exposure to more than the minimum.
