Our intermediate school serves students in grades 5 and 6. We have about 350 kids in our school, and all of them have general music class! My students are excited and eager to practice and learn to play. I am excited to be able to teach these students using a variety of techniques and curricula. In a typical year, we study keyboards, ukuleles, drums, and guitar. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, we hadn't been able to use any of these instruments in the past year and a half.
This year, we are able to be back in the music room and using instruments in new and exciting ways!
Students have been learning the fundamentals of music while playing bucket drums, drum set, and keyboards. They have been having so much fun playing music that they know and love, and through finding success quickly.
My Project
I am requesting headphones that they can use to practice keyboard and drums individually. During a normal music class, you will see kids playing bucket drums, drum set, and keyboards, often all at the same time! We use a lot of student choice, and I work hard to make sure they are hearing a variety of music, especially the songs and styles that they know and love. Unfortunately, most of the headphones in the music room are broken, or only have one ear that works!
Students need to be able to hear themselves during individual and group practice time!
This will allow them to self-assess and correct as they practice, as well as to hear the awesome music they are making!
My students are so excited to play the various instruments, but I can see them getting frustrated when they have trouble hearing themselves. They also sometimes have trouble hearing me give instructions over the instruments, so being able to have them practice with working headphones would make instruction much more efficient.
