Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school went from 400 to 900 students over the summer due to the demand for a high-quality, college-preparatory school in our neighborhood. In our neighborhood in West Dallas, for many of our families, their student will be the first in their family to graduate high school, let alone college! The path to college and beyond begins in primary school in creating a lifelong love of learning. Many of my scholars are English language learners. The path to success starts with having fun while learning!
My Project
My scholars would benefit from balance seats. At our school we have extended school day and our scholars are in a classroom from 7:45 to 4:00 most days. Our playground is only big enough for us to go outside every other day, so each class has a chance. Third graders need to move around and balance cushions would help them do that. My scholars were trying to search for an answer to all of our "wiggle problems". They saw that some other classrooms had flexible seating options, they loved the idea of yoga balls as seats. After discussing it we realized that yoga balls would be difficult for the custodians to clean around. A group of scholar decided to do some research and found a solution, balance discs! It is similar to a yoga ball but we could put it on our chair. Balance discs would help to create a healthy body which helps create a healthy mind. Scholars of this age need to be moving around during the day. I would love for them to be able to bounce and wiggle in their seats while we work.
