Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As an English as New Language teacher, I strive every day to give students the opportunity for exposure to language and make our learning experiences meaningful. English is a complex language to learn even for native speakers; thereby making it more difficult for new language learners. When we read fiction and non-fiction texts, the more opportunities students have to see the landscapes, to visualize the context, the more successful they are in not only comprehending the texts but in making connections and building critical thinking.
English Language Learners need multiple visuals and interactions with the world to enhance language acquisition.
Building language builds lifelong learners.
Our school is an inner city school that focuses not on test prep, but on performance-based assessments. We have a unique setting that allows and fosters student engagement, thought, and questioning. These skills take time to build with English Langauge Learners from various backgrounds.
My Project
The materials I am requesting will students travel the world from the comfort of our classroom. Using Google cardboard, students can not only see the world of our texts in English language arts but can immerse themselves in augmented and virtual reality. In doing so, my students can create organic and meaningful connections with literature and the world.
Creating connections visually will create more inquisitive and curious learners who are minds on.
Students are comfortable with the technological world and always ask to see things. What better way to do so than with Google Cardboard? I will be able to create virtual experiences -helping my students see the greater world that exists outside of Manhattan. When we read Night, they can put themselves at the gates of Auschwitz and see what Elie Wiesel saw. When we analyze articles about deforestation, students can place themselves in a forest before and after it's resources have been cut down.
