I teach middle school computer technology, which includes 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students. Ours is a very large school, with almost 1500 students, ranging from very high socio-economic backgrounds to very low. I have self-contained special education students included in my classes.
My students need to be able to save multimedia files! Our school server is fantastic, but in a large district like ours there is limited space. When working on projects like movies and basic programming through game design, the students are unable to save and lose all of their hard work.
My students could be so much more creative and productive if they had flash drives available for use in the classroom. The students could also "check out" a flash drive in order to work on certain projects at home. About half of the students in each class have their own flash drives. The other half of the class doesn't have many of the basic school supplies due to financial constraints on their families - I want to level the field and give each student in my room an equal opportunity to learn. If I had 15 flash drives for student use - each student would be able to save their larger projects so that they wouldn't have to start over each day. They would be more creative, more successful, and more selfconfident knowing that they had the same chances as everyone else and that their financial situation (lack of personal flash drive) wasn't going to "keep them down".
Your help will make it possible for all of my students, not just the more affluent ones, to learn to use movie making software, programming software, and audio software more effectively and creatively. They next great computer programmer might just be in my room! Help him/her discover her abilities!
