This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My 25 energetic and loving 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade scholars work independently to complete a monthly or weekly work chart at their own pace. While the Montessori materials lend themselves to mastery, feeling safe and comfortable is a major challenge in our urban public school to help each scholar meet their potential.
Despite their learning disabilities and different levels of understanding, they come in ready to learn every day with huge smiles on their faces.
They all have great ideas and really want to make their teachers and parents proud. Our school is a unique public Montessori magnet school in a large, high needs urban school district. My school is dedicated to providing a safe, stimulating, and peaceful environment for our scholars. We are a Title I school in which all of our scholars receive free or reduced lunches. Our school welcomes partnerships in the community, which provide necessary services to our scholars; however, our scholars still have large gaps to overcome.
My Project
Gaining Rubik's cubes for both everyday use and a weekly Rubik's Cube Club is essential to our initial implementation of STEM into the classroom. My scholars love borrowing my personal cubes as a short break or reward for finishing their work but it becomes an issue when only one or two scholars can use it. Their fascination and desire to learn something outside of screen time is a breath of fresh air.
I'm excited to give older scholars the opportunity to learn the cube and coach the younger scholars in an inclusive setting!
Starting a Rubik's Cube Club for grades 1st-8th will be an awesome learning experience. Developing life skills like perseverance in a team building experience during school hours will help foster some competition and compassion!
