Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

How would you feel if you were forced to read "baby books" every day? That's how many struggling readers feel about reading. They are frustrated and disappointed that all they can read are "baby books." My students will love these books that they want - and are able to read on their own!

I have a mixed second and third grade literacy class of struggling readers, but great thinkers!

They have difficulty sounding out words, but not thinking about the concepts! Life has dealt them a rough hand, but every day, they work to learn more and more.

My Project

Since they have difficulty reading, they are often only able to read books they consider to be beneath them. My students will absolutely love the titles in this book collection. Independent reading time will no longer be the most painful 30 minutes of the school day. These books will help my students to be internally motivated to read, not just forced to read! This can change everything for them. When they want to read, they become better readers, and then they will be able to succeed more easily in all of the subject areas in school!

Your donation will be helping to motivate a group of students who are eager and willing to learn, but often have difficulty being successful, mostly due to circumstances beyond the control of a 7 or 8 year old.

Reading success by third grade is a strong predictor of high school graduation. Thank you in advance for helping me to motivate and inspire our students.
