We are a Title 1 class of 17 students that come from a rural community at the Appalachian line. Where are my students? Home. On March 12, 2020, I helped my students pack up everything we thought they may need and sent them home to begin this new concept of virtual learning. Without the structure, the ability to meet with my students one on one, and have that connection, many of them struggle to maintain the skills and concepts they were just starting to understand. With these materials, my students will be to connect, communicate, practice, and be excited about learning while at home.
My Project
Each student will utilize their personal whiteboard, as we would in class, to answer questions or complete tasks as I am using my large wipe board during instruction virtually. The magnetic strips will be wonderful for sentence starters, transition words, or to be used as writing dividers. The lined charts will help them see and practice proper writing form on paper.
Whether learning from home or in the classroom, the students will continue to learn, differently, but in a familiar way by using materials that are similar to those in their classroom and help them feel that connection.
They will be able to see and enjoy the colorful magnetic items as I use them to introduce or review money, time, and number sense. When we return to class, the students will be able to practice by manipulating the pieces themselves. The poetry books are a fun way for the students to practice writing skills, expand vocabulary, and be expressive. Free Verse is a wonderful way for students to express their feelings about this new way of life and learning. What a way to document this experience.
It is so important that children are comfortable and feel they have a connection to their peers and their teacher. By utilizing all these materials, each student will have that connection whether at home or back in the regular classroom, and be learning in a fun and colorful way.
