Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work in an elementary school in North Long Beach with over 1,000 students. At our school, 92% of students receive free lunch. 40% of our students are English language learners, and in my classroom, that percentage rises to 48%. In my particular class, I have 35 students, of whom 17 are English Language learners and one who is mainstreaming from Special Education day class. They all have a wide range of learning needs and levels. Despite many different and often difficult circumstances that they experience daily, they come to school with positive attitudes every day, ready to learn. They are motivated to do their best and to take in every opportunity put forward to them at school and it is my goal to provide them with as many engaging and enriching experiences that I can.
My Project
My students are a lively bunch that LOVE both creating art and watching videos. The most exciting thing for them would be to be able to create their own videos. We are slowly putting together the components to allow the class to have the tools they need to easily write, direct, act in, and edit their own videos.
As a classroom with so many English Language Learners, having a microphone and an iPad,
to give them the opportunity to record and perform in their own videos, will not only help with their confidence and public speaking skills, but it will boost their English Language development in a fun and engaging way!
While the students are so excited to be able to record and edit their videos, interestingly, so many are nervous to star in them. A great deal of that nervousness comes from their lack of confidence in speaking in front of groups, letting their voices be heard. With a wireless microphone, even the softest voices could be heard, helping to build their self-confidence and foster public speaking skills.
We need an iPad to film and edit our videos on. With this iPad, we would be able to have multiple groups working on their projects at once.
Students will be able to expand their language skills as they play back their videos, edit them, and hear their voices. This project would work to give students the opportunity to explore theater and performing arts while tying in language, social studies, science, and math standards.
