This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are from a very low income, high poverty area on the West side of Charlotte, N.C. Many of them are in families who struggle to provide basic needs for their children. Many of our students take care of younger siblings at home. Our school provides them with a safe, stable environment where they can not only learn but for 7 hours a day just be a "kid".
75% of our students qualify for free breakfast and lunch.
They are fortunate to have 2 full-time teachers in their classroom all day. This enables us to effectively meet their needs both academically, socially and emotionally. Every morning, we are at the door to greet them with a smile and a warm hug to begin their day. This allows them to leave any sort of struggles or stress they may have had at home at the door.
Our day is filled with many hands-on learning opportunities. They also receive small group and one-on-one instruction where needed. My students deserve the very best educational experience. Regardless of the environment that a child is born into, they all deserve the same experiences that they will carry with them for a lifetime.
My Project
These leveled reading books will allow our children to get lost in their imaginations and natural curiosities about the world around them. Our students love to read but often do not have books at home. Therefore, we exhaust every book resource in the classroom to ensure they have literature to read.
They enjoy the nonfiction books as it exposes them to the real world around them.
These books will allow them to build their background knowledge and vocabulary in an applicable way. This will support them as they begin to read fluently. The literacy games that are requested will support students who have not had a strong foundation in literacy prior to kindergarten. They will be used to help students identify sounds and blend sounds together to make words in a creative, fun way. These hands-on resources will be both engaging and effective for them.
